Harry PotterAudio Books

View List of New Additions October 2008

Audio Books owned by our School Resource Centres which have been appropriately catalogued into our Library software, Alice, can be loaned to students on an iPod Shuffle or Nano following normal library lending rules. These audio books are generally purchased from web sites such as Audible.com or where permission has been granted. Audio books currently on Cassette Tapes or CDs can be format shifted into the AAC format with restrictions (Refer Copyright information sent to School Resource Centres)
In most cases the iPod Shuffle is the ideal delivery system as it is well designed to store a single audio book for loan. However, for larger books like the Harry Potter series, the iPod Nano is a better solution as its screen becomes very useful for this delivery.

Audio books are a great solution for our students who have a print disability eg visual, dyslexia as well as those students who are relunctant readers for a variety of reasons. In particular, students who are visually impaired who go to another area to access audio equipment during silent reading times can now remain with their peers rather than feel excluded. Of course you have to factor in the 'looking cool' element! Wearing a white lanyard with an iPod Shuffle attached will certainly aid inclusion.

Other reasons:
Weight issue for students with a Physical Disability (carrying an iPod Shuffle with 1 or 2 books loaded vs carrying regular print materials)
Fitness (combine 2 activities, walking and listening to book/study notes)
Books can be listened to while doing other activities eg travelling or at night without relying on light
Provides another way to access literature for everyone
Some students find the act of reading very tiring, listening eleminates this
Research shows listening to audio books increases comprehension skills
Kids love hearing the different voices

ListeningText to Speech

Text to Speech is useful for students who have a print disability eg visual impairment, dyslexia or reading difficulty for a variety of reasons, or just as an aid to study. Students will be able to...proof read their work, listen to study notes rather than read, download webpages to study offline. Audio files can then be transfered to iPod/iPod Shuffles or burnt onto a CD to be played in stereo systems

Using OS X inbuilt options (see How to's for detailed instructions)
Using a key combination to invoke speech on selected text (more info)
VoiceOver: Activate through System Prefs > Universal Access > Seeing
Using Services (Under each Application menu, choose Speech after text has been selected - Note: doesn't work for all apps)
Word: Use the Speech toolbar

Using Software
iSpeak: Copy/import any text or download web pages. This program then auto converts it to Mp3 then catalogues in iTunes.
Cepstral Voices (better than inbuilt system voices)

How to's
Key combination to invoke speech on selected text
VoiceOver: link to PDF & MP3 instructions
Bringing it all together using iSpeak, Cepstral & iTunes
