Certificate of Special Education

In Term 2, twenty-five teachers from Primary schools across the Diocese commenced the Certificate of Special Education (Autism Spectrum Disorder). The course has been developed through a partnership with the University of Wollongong and the Catholic Education Office. It has been designed to address the professional development needs of teachers who teach students with autism in mainstream or specialised settings.

The participants will gain up to date information about the causes of autism and the major issues affecting teachers, families, and individuals with autism. The course focuses on extending teachers' networks and in teaching the skills that will enable them to be confident and competent in working with students with autism. Throughout the course, a range of speakers have provided practical and interesting information. The final day of the course will be the 23rd of June with a focus on positive behaviour strategies and will be presented by staff from the Autism Association. The day will culminate in a graduation ceremony for all participants.
